The Heritage Carriages Project
Each activity you can see in the slides above are ongoing and the Trust continues to keep history alive. Your donations and fundraising play a big part in that.
The Gauge Museum plays a key part in our operations, both where the Trust’s office is, but where our learning opportunities can be seen. The Museum has recently undergone a refurbishment. Situated inside the Gauge Museum Bishops Lydeard, on the first floor, lies Gauge Junction, the Model Railway. As shown in the pictures, the Model Railway is a miniature layout that enthuses many volunteers, young and old, to operate its trains.
Turning to restoration, our GWR Sleeping Car No. 9838, presents a long association with the Trust. This Sleeping Car was painstakingly restored to its former glory for the last twenty years until it was returned to traffic in May 2006. Staying with carriages, the Trust has partnered with the main West Somerset Railway supporting organisations to support the Heritage Carriages Project.
Along the West Somerset Railway line, there are noticeable areas where the Trust either has helped restore carriages, stations and locomotives and where more funds could help us to restore even more rolling stock. Between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, we have another Museum, the Gauge Museum Blue Anchor, then purchased by the Trust in 1980 coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Great Western Railway (GWR).
